The benefits of a Massage in Pregnancy

Updated: Oct 1

For millennia, massage has been practiced across various countries and cultures, showcasing the profound ability of touch to provide comfort, healing, and relaxation to our bodies from infancy through to old age.

During pregnancy, tensions and aches develop due to the strain of carrying a child on the body.  Swedish massage techniques can help relieve these tensions and contribute towards the well-being of the expectant mother.

Pregnancy Massage

First, a warning:

Massage is not considered safe in the first trimester of pregnancy.  This is because there is an increased risk of miscarriage in the first 12 weeks and there are concerns that increasing the blood flow may be harmful.   Therefore, please wait until your second trimester to book a pregnancy massage. Please make sure your therapist is trained specifically in pre-natal massage before booking.  This is because certain types of massage in particular areas can be dangerous or bring on premature labour.

What symptoms can massage help with?

As the baby grows larger in the womb, most women start to experience some discomfort.  Muscles can start to ache, in particular in the lower back, shoulders and hips due to carrying the extra weight.  Fluid gain and swelling can occur in the legs and feet, in particular if you are working on your feet all day.  There can be a general feeling of heaviness and tiredness, plus being extra hormonal.  Anxiety is common and so is sleeplessness, especially towards the end of pregnancy when it is difficult to find a comfortable position.

Massage can help with many of these symptoms.  A pregnancy massage will target those areas of tension and aches, while avoiding any deep tissue or working out knots.  It will be a relaxing experience, helping you to connect with your body as it works hard to nurture the baby.  You should find yourself entering into a state of deep relaxation as the stresses and worries are put aside for the moment allowing you to feel calm and cared for. The massage increases circulation and blood flow to the baby, helping both mother and baby to relax.  The use of safe oils and balms softens skin and creates a sense of well-being.  It increases body temperature and improves muscle tone.

The massage is designed for the whole body, including the back, legs and feet, arms and hands, abdomen, neck, face and scalp.  Please tell your therapist if there are any areas to avoid or spend more time on.

After a massage, your skin can be sensitive for 24 to 48 hours so it is advised to avoid sunbathing, perfumed products, make-up, swimming or body lotion among other things.  Always check with your therapist if you have any questions.
